Customer of the Quarter

Shari Saiki Design Studio

In our past issues, this space has been dedicated to profiling a "customer" who has been a long time supporter of PAL and our products. Their consistent sales figures have been an important
reason for our success.

There is another segment of our clientele whose actual purchases at PAL may barely be noticeable but whose contribution and support are no less valuable. At PAL, we see our relationship with architectural and design firms as the life breath of our growth and
Shari Saiki is one of many who stand out in this regard.

Shari started in the industry as a draftsperson for Mark Masuoka Design and worked her way into a position as a lead interior designer for the firm that was one of the tops in the industry. After ten years with Masuoka, Shari decided to strike it on her own rented a cubicle in a co-op office for $500 a month. She never looked back. Along the way she developed her own unique style that she calls Contemporary Pacifica and word spread that there was something new and exciting coming out of her design studio.

Share now operates out of a two-story office/showroom on Pohukaina Street and is recognized as a leader in the interior design field. Her abilities have not gone unnoticed by her peers as the recent deluge of industry awards prove. Shari's back-to-back "Parade of Homes" Grand Champion Awards in 2001 and 2002 for her work on the Stanford Carr Development's Peninsula sub-division in Hawai'i Kai are just two examples of the trend setting vision she is imparting on residential design. We are sure there is more to come.

Congratulations Shari and thank you for your continued support!

Punchline Panels

Grass America has introduced Punchline decorative panels, which offer a striking alternative to wood, glass, and metal-based paneling products. Punchline panels are lightweight,
non-adhesive, and consist of high impact-resistant polystyrene. The punched pattern design on each panel is available in 8mm round or 10mm square shaped holes, with custom punches available by special order. To create a unique effect, panels may also be backed by a plastic film called Lux, which is available in a choice of sapphire blue or translucent opal.

Punchline panel consists of a base of styrene, butadiene, and rubber-modified colorants and in either a metal-coated lacquered polyester
film finish (HGS) or pigmented lacquer coating finish (PF). All Punchline panels are safeguarded against damage by a protective peel-off film.

For much information on Punchline panels, contact your PAL representative today.

Keahi Meyers

Get to Know One of Our PALs

Kulia 'I Ka Nu'u ...Strive for the Highest

If you've been in our warehouse or taken a delivery from us in the past six years, there's a good chance you have run into Keahi Meyers. One of a long list of Kamehameha Schools graduates to make their way to PAL, Keahi thrives on being the first to offer a handshake and a morning greeting to the PAL staff.

As we move into the New Year, we hope that Keahi's friendly demeanor and concern for customer service will be a great addition to our outside sales force. Keahi will be calling on many of our general contractors and cabinet shops. With knowledge of our products and operations, we are sure he will be very successful.

When he isn't working, Keahi enjoys spending time with his family, surfing, and pursuing his second career as a musician. His band, Lilikoi Boys, has played at many PAL functions and has also played gigs at local nightclubs. They recently played at Tiki's Bar & Grill this past New Year's Eve.

Keahi has worked hard these many years and is always striving for more. He is looking forward to this new opportunity. Please welcome him into your shop. And maybe if you're lucky, he might play you a tune on his 'ukulele.

Tech Tips

Installing DuraStone HPF

Pacific American Lumber, Inc. recently held Congoleum® Installation Clinics throughout the islands. Here are a few tips for installing DuraStone HPF that were revealed during the seminars. Correct installation of the product will make a happy customer so heed the following rules:

  • Make sure the subfloor is level 3/16" within 10 feet

  • Use a proper notched trowel (1/16" x 1/32" x 1/32")

  • Wipe off excess dust from tile edges and backs (dust is the worst enemy of pressure sensitive adhesive)

  • Do not fan dry the glue as it can put dust on adhesive and it skims over surface

  • Lay tiles low and tight to the floor - the Magilla Gorilla approach helps prevent gaps between tiles

  • Acclimate tiles to installation area for at least a few hours. Do not take the boxes from "hot" van to the floor and expect to not have gaps. The tile will expand and contract.

  • If you do have gaps because of uneven floors or tile contraction, a no-sand grout filled into gaps and wiped over with a damp cloth had proven to be an effective filler.
