CPR
... Bringing Hartco Hardwood Flooring Back to Life
|
Featured Product ...
Hartco Hardwood Flooring
Some things are just too good to let go.
In our industry, new products are introduced by the minute and it
is sometimes difficult to decide among the choices which direction
you should go. That make it all the more important to contractors
and designers to rely on proven products when they are deciding
on what to use for their next project. With this in mind, PAL has
gone to great lengths to bring Hartco Hardwood Flooring back to
Hawai'i and back to Life!
|
With a little CPR - we are
able to resuscitate this fine flooring line. Hartco was the product
of choice in the 80's and early 90's and anyone involved in the
flooring industry knew the acrylic impregnated hardwood floor called
Patter Plus was the best product in town. Sadly, the distribution
changed hands and his wonderful product was allowed to go into cardiac
arrest.
But the doctor is in the house - Hartco is
now stocked in Honolulu by PAL! And they have widened their product
offering to include parquet and standard engineered flooring in
oak, maple, cherry, and pecan. They continue to produce the Patter
Plus acrylic impregnated plank as well. Hartco's newest line,
the Valenza Collection, is already being greeted by the design community
with open arms. This collection features an engineered wood floor
in a variety of exotic species and a heavy wear layer, which will
allow for resanding down the road.
Please call your PAL representative for samples
and information or visit the Hartco website at

tab.

Puka
Yes, when historians look back at the building
products and wood flooring industry in Hawai'i in the year 2003,
they may find a "puka." As we all know, the "puka"
in puka shells refers to the hold in the shell which is so conveniently
used to pull the thread through to make those infamous necklaces
and bracelets so treasured by the world as authentic Hawaiian jewelry. |

Hall of Mirrors in Palace of Versailles
|
Historians will no doubt use
this description because of the missing 2003 Spring edition of the
PAL newsletter! As it turned out, the newsletter never made it to
press due to variety of reasons not including lack of ink or paper.
The fundamental flaw was nothing more than the editor and chief
correspondent not being in the state to complete his share of the
copy.
The before-mentioned editor was wandering
through the many provinces of France and Italy during the month
of May discovering all the wonderful architecture, people and food
that these countries had to offer. As incredible as I had imagined
it would be, nothing compared to the reality of standing in the
middle of the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles and staring down at
the quarter sawn French oak floor which had carried the history
of much of that era across its face. Hey, what can I say, occupational
hazard.
Driving through hills of Tuscany past vineyards
that had been harvested for centuries also brought a similar feeling
of awe and appreciation - although no signs of any Roman legions
were to be found. Alas the trip was over and returning to Hawai'i
is always a treat. The fall edition of What's Up @ PAL is ready
and we hope it is well worth the wait. There are lots of product
introductions to sink your teeth into including the new Formica
Solid Surface and the revival of Hartco hardwood flooring products.
"Viva la Puka."
Aloha,
Chris Nied

PAL's Notable Project
LEED-ing the Way
This newsletter's project of the quarter
applauds the recent construction of the new AIA (American
Institute of Architects) Honolulu Chapter offices in the Stangenwald
Building in Honolulu. |
|
The project focused
on creating a commercial space that was fully functional while
meeting the requirements of the U.S. Green Building Councils
National LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) Green Building Rating System™ is a voluntary,
consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance,
sustainable buildings. The Honolulu Chapter of the AIA LEED™
requirements for their own offices. |
As the architect record on this project,
Ferraro Choi and Associates went to great lengths to recycle
much of the demolitions and construction materials. They also
incorporated furniture and fixtures from the previous office.
Where new materials were required, sustainable "Green"
products were utilized. To this end, Pacific American Lumber
was honored to be involved as a supplier on this project.
Columbia Forest Products Smartwood™plywood panels were
sued in the construction of bookcases and countertops and
Natural Cork cork flooring was used for the kitchen.
Both of these products are stocked locally at PAL's warehouse
in Kalihi.
Congratulations to the organization
and to Ferraro Choi and Associates for the many awards received
and for "LEED-ing" the way to better building practices
in Hawai'i. |

Formica
Solid Surfacing - Marine Ice
|
Cutting Edge
Products
Featuring Formica Solid Surfacing
Formica is proud to announce the launch of
Formica Solid Surfacing (FSS). It's like Surell and Fountainhead,
their previous solid surfacing, but the formula is new! Better flexibility,
easier fabrication and new colors, plus it's still nonporous, stain
resistant and virtually seamless.
|
Along with the new name, came
2 new patterns. The luxurious Mosaic series is enriched with complex
large aggregate, reminiscent of rocky earth and natural stone and
is available in 4 new colors. Styled in the cool colors of water,
the Ice design captures the transparency of glass with subtle pearlescent
shimmers. An elegant translucent surface, the Ice design comes in
3 new colors. FSS is a homogenous thermoset polymer alloy, comprised
of an acrylic polyester co-polymer component and filled with aluminum
trihydrate. FSS sheets have met all requirements and have been certified
by NSF International (NSF-51 Certification) for both splash and
food zones and institutional environments.
Formica Solid Surfacing is an elegant material
available in a variety of colors and granite-like patterns. It gives
a rich, luxurious feeling to kitchen counters, work islands, wet
bars, vanity tops, windowsills, tabletops, and many other applications.
